Whilst in NYC back in September I finally caught up with my old friend Rachel Toledo (formally Rachel Wood & one of New Yorks top makeup artists) for some overdue cocktails at the Standard Hotel roof top in the Meat Packing District of Chelsea, alongside catching up on gossip the best news is…
TMS is pleased to announce a exciting collaboration with Rachel of sending TMS graduates over to assist her backstage during NY Fashion week.. More details on this project to follow!! But for now, we catch up with the shows Rachel has been working on during last months fashion week & the looks created.
Working alongside South Carolina based designer ‘Storm Dorris’ who has showcased for the first time in NYC Rachel gives us the low down on how she creates each look.
“For this show I wanted a waterlily pastel colour look- nothing too perfect, softer washes of colour. I also brought in celebrity nail artist Rachel Shim ( who’s clients include Naomi Watts & Amy Shumer) She created an array of pastel nails and attached real fresh flowers to accent them. It is interesting when working with designers who may have an aesthetic that works in their city but it is my job to make sure that they look current enough to compete in NYC. I usually try to give each designer a look that will enhance the collection, make it shine and have an edge’
‘We also had designer Kelly Dempsey formally on Project Runway- Rack Addik. With newer designers sometimes you get more fun and unusual type of fashion. Her collection was straight out of the Spice Girls closet circa 1993. Everything from sequins to platform shoes walked down the runway. So we created a makeup look that I liked to call barbie on an acid trip- lots of silver glitter and big lashes.
Lavanya Coodly was another designer where my teams had a challenge of creating multiple day and evening looks so the makeup and hair styles were split between a natural clean skin with messy hair andknotted up do’s with a dark vamp lip for evening.
But I’d have to say my favourite look was for designer Onyii & Co. who’s ethnic colourful prints paired perfectly with mirrored glossy orange/red lips and toes. My team and I also created fake freckles on all the girls which came out really beautiful’
*Anyone who's graduated from The Makeup School will have access to an online interview with Rachel for assisting her backstage during NY Fashion week.
