The Platinum course is a combination of both the Silver & Gold Classes. During the first week of the Platinum class students will achieve a solid working knowledge of makeup artistry as well as detailed and practical advice on breaking into the industry itself. The second week is about creative fundamentals and students will be given expert industry tips and tricks as well as having the opportunity to work on a photoshoot alongside a professional photographer, stylist and hair stylist.
WEEK ONE OUTLINE.
Skin Care; including prep and hygiene
Great makeup starts with great skin! Understanding different skin types & which products to use are key! You will also be taught how to maintain kit hygiene - essential in the makeup artist industry.
Tools of the Trade; maintaining brushes/setting up/building a kit
You will be taught when and how to work with the many different brushes on offer. Using the wrong brush can be time consuming and potentially disastrous. Towards the end of the course, once you have had a chance to use most of the makeupon offer, we will go through the kit essentials including discussing ’steal versus expensive’ for those building a kit on a budget!
Foundation; achieving various skin finishes.
Sheer cover, full cover, matt or glossy- we will teach you how to achieve the perfect foundation base & how to gauge when enough is enough. Applying the wrong foundation can end your career before it has started.
Concealing and Corrective make up,
From dark circles to acne scars, tattoos or bruises - you will be taught how deal with these everyday problems. Easy when you know how!
Strobing, highlighting & shading can hide or accentuate a feature. We will teach you the tips & tricks of these very important techniques. How to use various bronzers in creams & powders followed by different styles of blushers also in creams & powders.
Choosing the correct eye shadow is daunting but once you know how, and the clues you should be looking for it’s plain sailing from there on. Laura Mercier herself kindly passed on her vital tips to us and during this section we will pass them on to you. The same theory also applies to lips.
Working with textures; powders/creams/paints,
Eyeshadows, blushers, contour kits & eyebrow products all come in different formats. You will be taught about each of them - the best techniques to use, when and which to choose.
Natural makeup/Natural eyes
Natural is certainly not boring! You will be taught how to make the most of your client/model using everything you've learned during the “colour theory” part of the course.
Creating a smokey eye is a TMS favourite. You will be taught how to adapt a smokey eye for different eye shapes - small, big, droopy, hooded. There is something for everyone. The correct brushes & product selection are paramount to achieve a seamless, beautifully blended finish.
Jacqui was taught how to execute the perfect eyeliner flick by one of the top makeup artists in the industry. She will teach you the same technique as well as how to direct your client/model on where to look to achieve best results and how you can steady shaky hands.
False eyelash application.
Individuals, strip, corner lashes - where to trim the lashes & how to get them on!
Big lips, small lips, uneven lips - we will cover all areas on how to apply lipliner & correct the shape along the way. You will learn how to apply lipstick & glosses to maximise the full potential of each lip shape. The finale in this section is the ‘Red Lip’. Think Dita Von Teese!
Would you be happy with being shown just one ‘Bridal’ look? A little secret … there is no such thing as a “bridal look!’ No-one wants to look the same!! Jacqui has 15 years experience of doing makeup for brides & she will tell you that each one has been different. This session is all about getting those brides booking YOU after they have had their trial session. No one teaches this area quite like TMS. You will not be disappointed!!
Here you will be taught tips & tricks on how to add definition & deal with areas that become problematic as we age, such as the eyes & lips.
More often than not, too much makeup is applied on male actors/models. You will learn how to achieve perfection when it comes to Male Grooming.
Ears, hands, legs, arms, feet, décolletage! At some point in your career you will need to cover theses areas. Jacqui knows only too well how a body shimmer can enhance limbs having created her own special body shimmer for Nicole Scherzinger when touring with the Pussycat Dolls. So who better to advise on this subject?!
Directional Catwalk Trends; looks/influences
Ever wondered what goes on backstage? Find out what happens, how it all works and later on in the course you will have the opportunity to add your own creative influence.
Eyebrows (grooming, shaping and maintenance)
Eyebrows frame your face and therefore are extremely important. You will be taught how to tame & shape and which tools to use.
Blocking Eyebrows and Facial Jewellery (adornment)
A fun way to learn how to cover eyebrows using wax & sealants
Period Makeup (1920s to present day)
The history of makeup is fascinating and having a good knowledge of it will be very useful particularly when it comes recreating a look from a different era. It is also a great source of inspiration and you may well find it helpful when developing your own unique look. We will explore each section & create some fun theatrical looks.
HD Makeup (Makeup for film and TV).
An in-depth explanation on how High Definition makeup works. Important, especially as everything in this day & age is shot in HD.
Thursday concludes with an exciting half day shopping in Covent Garden. We will visit our favourite makeup emporiums - Bobbi Brown, Illamasqua, Urban Decay & Kryolan - where you will be entitled to special TMS discounts.
Glitters and Stencils
Love or loathe the stuff you will have to work with this product. Follow our lead on how to control & create amazing glitter eyes, lips & eyeliner. This will be followed by a stencil tutorial & how to adapt them to fit around specific areas.
Working with Photographic / Natural Lighting,
Where you do your makeup is not always glamorous and where it is applied - in natural light or studio light - will effect how it looks on camera. In this section you will be given tips on how to deal with any lighting issues & Jacqui will share some of her entertaining stories about her past experiences.
Yes, that’s correct MISTAKES! Everyone makes them -, when the pressure is on and time is of the essence, and you have made a “boo boo”, how do you correct it? Or, the director has changed his mind, doesn’t want smokey eyes rather, instead, wants natural & you have just 10 minutes to change a whole look. Don’t panic! We will teach you how to make changes & corrections in seconds!! This will be as invaluable and every bit as important as knowing how to apply makeup!
Introduction to the Industry; working on set/shoot etiquette
Knowing "who’s who" on a photoshoot is key. We will make sure you are fully briefed on all areas and will also give you advice on how to network. In this section, you will learn some useful business skills including how to manage invoices and tax returns.
Client Direction/Understanding the Brief
Knowing what is expected of you & executing it to perfection will most certainly get you on the ladder to success. After an in-depth explanation you will be given a brief to work towards on your final day.
WEEK 2 OUTLINE
Contour & Cut Crease
Not to be confused by the contour tutorial in the previous week. Here we create shapes & angles similar to drag artists, think RuPaul, This then leads on to learning about cut crease. Once you have mastered the cut-crease eye-makeup technique we will show you how to create this look using the correct products and the all-important professional tools. Then, it's up to you to add your own twist!
Backstage Workshop/Directional Catwalk Trends; looks/influences.
This section will be taught by professional makeup artists with many years of experience working at the London, Paris, Milan and New York Fashion Weeks.
You will be briefed on what life is like as a makeup artist with exclusive insider "know how"., get invaluable advice on how to assist when backstage and how to survive in the competitive makeup industry world.
Following this there will be a demonstration of a current catwalk look. We’ll show you the importance of layering products correctly and teach you the latest techniques using our favourite products and tools. After the demonstration, you will be expected to recreate the look with expert guidance from your teacher.
Glitters and Stencils with GLITTERMASQUE
Helen Lewis is a renowned hair and makeup artist who studied at the Delamar Academy and specialises in glitter makeup. Helen has been creating glitter makeup looks since 2006. Beginning at Glastonbury’s Dance Village, then following a period of working at festivals and nightclubs across Europe, Helen moved to London where she started her company GLITTERMASQUE, offering ‘pop-up glitter boutiques’ to the likes of Harvey Nichols.
The session with Helen will cover Embellishment, Beautification, Decoration, Gilding and Ornamentation. You will also learn about creative adornment in makeup focusing on three of our favourite artists, Pat McGrath, Alex Box and Phyllis Cohen.
Using makeup references from backstage at McQueen and introducing techniques and materials, including glitter & Face Lace, be prepared to get creative!
You will get to experience what it will be like to work on your own photoshoot, shooting with real models. This will provide an excellent opportunity to kickstart your portfolio as well as getting experience of working alongside a professional photographer, stylist and hair stylist.
On-hand to help style the photoshoot will be TMS stylist, Martha, armed with clothes from Mrs Jones, who has dressed the likes of Kylie Minogue, The Scissor Sisters and Florence & The Machine.
You will be required to create a moodboard for each look. This will be advised on the first day of the course, giving each plenty of time to put them together.
